London's Burning

Fire blazing in London during the July heatwave 2022.

On July 19, London hit temperatures of over 40C for the first time ever.
As a direct result, the London Fire Service experienced its busiest
day since WWII.

🌡️ In the UK this week, the Met Office issued a red extreme heat warning for the first time ever. An extreme warning which indicates threat to life.

🌡️ Last night was the warmest night ever recorded at an average of 25C across the country.

🌡️ Today, temperatures exceeded 40C for the first time ever in the UK.

🌡️ London hit a record-breaking 40.2C by lunchtime - making it the 5th hottest place in the world at the time, with temperatures still climbing.

🌡️ Temperatures expected to reach 42C during the afternoon in some areas.

Heatwaves such as this are becoming more likely and more extreme because of human-induced climate change. The world has already warmed by about 1.1C since the industrial era began, and temperatures will keep rising unless governments around the world make steep cuts to emissions.
